Hacker pilots

CIVIL Aviation has to be joking….CCTV around General Aviation is not going to prove anything.

Bishop Curry not faithful

Bishop Michael Curry is an engaging communicator. This is evident from his Royal Wedding sermon and, more recently, his sermon at Christ Church Cathedral on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE). But more important than being engaging, a preacher of God’s word must be faithful to God’s word. Sadly, by this more important measurement, Bishop Curry falls far short.

Make a better first impression

I write to wholeheartedly agree with the chairman of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce, Michael Maura: the urgent redevelopment of the Prince George Wharf must be a priority of this government. In general, The Bahamas tends to fail at identifying and taking advantage of emerging economic opportunities. Well, in this instance, Arawak Port Development seems to have identified a great one.

An answer for Brave

Although it was not his intention, Guardian cartoonist Sideburns very effectively provided the answer to Brave Davis’ question about where the money was coming from to buy the Grand Lucayan Hotel in Grand Bahama.

We must not accept shanty towns

THERE are certain matters that are beyond politics. We are a small country of 350,000 people. These islands belong to the Bahamian people. These are beautiful islands. We must protect them.

Not our kind of human

The bulldozers are being fuelled up. Mothers are packing up only the priority children items. The kids play as they have always done, as the kids have played for the last four decades. Nothing will change for these children, until the bulldozers are within earshot. Then they will run alongside their mothers, looking back back to get one last glimpse of the only thing they have ever known as home.

Police bullies

AS a Bahamian, I was disgusted and saddened to read that a policeman shot a man’s dog for no reason.

AirBNB is not a tax free visit

Re: Vacation Rentals avoid VAT embrace – for now. Tribune Business 26th July.

Keep an eye on the profit

THE sponsoring of promotional events etc must be sensibly approved where there is a chance that profit will be made.

Show us the money

Hello again my Bahamian citizens, another year has gone by, and it baffles me that there is still not one word being said in any quarters about our thirty million, plus, dollars ($30,000,000 plus) that was spent, wasted or pocketed on the so-called Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival.

Divisions over national honours

THE National Honours… Is it just a small storm or a gigantic Cat seven hurricane? In 2018 we have resurrected partisan division based on ethnic and political lines…We should be ashamed. Surely we are not so immature? It seems we are totally insensitive. Shame on PM Minnis.

Name and shame

THE Treasury is owed hundreds of millions - it seems the Government and its agency are not very successful in collecting those millions.

Epilogue to Ganja

IN Jamaica, grass is heralded as the weed of knowledge. If you want to become wise, light up a spliff. Each household can grow as much as five plants. Small amounts of marijuana for personal use has been decriminalised. It is also legal for religious purposes. Rastafarians can use marijuana openly as a part of their ceremony. Jamaicans are excited about the possibilities of the country becoming a grass tourism destination.

Postal service collapse

While I know there is a general collapse of the postal service throughout the country, my comments are more specifically related to the Cable Beach Post Office where I have a post box.

Valsartan recall clarification

THERE seems to be a bit of confusion in the general populace and on social media regarding the recent recall of Valsartan, a drug used to treat high blood pressure. The recall did NOT affect ALL brands.

Why drop the World Relays?

Of all the inexplicably dumb decisions made by the Minnis government the one to cancel the World relays has to rank among the top five.

Farewell to Basil Sands

Illustrious Basil Sands loved God. He was devoted to his God and his Anglican Church, while respecting the many ways in which people express their spirituality.

Ban exports of Queen Conch

STROMBUS gigas or Queen Conch as it is known to most of us, is collapsing in most of its historic Caribbean region.

A cardinal error by the Pope?

POPE Francis of Rome expressed words to the effect “God made you like this” and being gay does not matter.

Paying tribute to the man from East Street

As we celebrate our recognised heroes. I am honoured to pay tribute to the man from East Street. I wrote this on August 25th, 2000 the day Sir Lynden died. Titled the Man From East Street.

Why the row over Sir Ronald?

I am old enough, despite my youthful looks, to remember the late Sir Roland T Symonette and, of course, the late Sir Stafford L Sands. They were both integral members of what was then loosely known as the United Bahamian Party (UBP) which held political sway over our country during the 1950s and 1960s. Most adherents of the UBP were so-called “white” Bahamians but there were hundreds of “black” Bahamians who also sang from the same hymn sheet.

A tribute to Alfred Bullard

IN the sixties and early seventies our Criminal Investigation Department was led by the late Stanley Moir, who joined the Police Service here from Bermuda. He was able to get approval for an increase in personnel to join stalwarts, such as Ormond Briggs, Anthony Fields, Milan Gittens, Louis Hemmings, Courtney Strachan and Allardyce Strachan.

Mangrove Cay needs

Waste health alert

Some years ago, there was a terrible outbreak of conch poisoning in Nassau.
